Grants
Grants are funds provided by governments, nonprofits, or private foundations that businesses do not have to repay. Unlike loans or venture capital, grants do not require giving up ownership, making them attractive to entrepreneurs who want to maintain full control. They are typically awarded to businesses that meet specific goals, such as promoting innovation, creating jobs, or supporting key industries.
In Wisconsin and the Midwest, entrepreneurs can access local, state, and federal programs through organizations like the U.S. Small Business Administration, Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, and United States Department of Agriculture. Applying usually requires a detailed proposal explaining how funds will be used and the project’s impact. Although highly competitive, grants offer a valuable way to secure funding without taking on debt or sacrificing equity.
Jem Grant
The Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) Grant is a tourism-focused funding program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism that helps nonprofit organizations (such as destination marketing organizations, event groups, and community collaboratives) promote events, destinations, and sales efforts to attract visitors from within Wisconsin and across the Midwest. It reimburses a portion of eligible marketing and promotional costs, which often can be up to 75% in the first year, with the goal of increasing tourism, visitor spending, and economic impact in local communities. While it isn’t specifically for individual entrepreneurs or startups, it can benefit entrepreneurial ventures tied to larger tourism events or regional marketing efforts that draw a broader audience to Wisconsin communities.
